The bigger picture

The bigger picture
What is your picture? what picture do you see? and what is the picture that you have of yourself? these are but for some few questions that we may ask about the picture, (the imaginary picture for now).

It is important to have an imaginary picture of yourself and of things, that is the least you owe to yourself but that picture should be a good picture.

It is important as well that you see a good picture of yourself, can you imagine you going through your picture collection and all that you see is the bad pictures you detest and which gives you negative reflections of yourself. Who wants to see a depressing picture of themselves or of the people they love? I guess no one in his or her rightful mind will want such a thing.

What picture you have of yourself is also a important, do everything possible to gave a good picture of yourself, after all what matters is what you think of yourself first, them what other think of you second and not the other way round as we often find ourselves doing. We think of what picture people have of us first and what picture we have of ourselves second. That is completely wrong lets change such mentality, it doesn't help, it wont help and it is not right.

It is important to look at the bigger picture all the time, otherwise we may easily loose all that we have being working so hard for and settle with the little things in life.

The small gains that you have now, which is making you think it is enough to let go of your big dream is not worth it, you have come this far and just in a little while you may reach your goal and achieve your dream big time, dont be short sighted and regret in future for not pressing on a little further to achieve real success.

I have a student who after completing most of the subjects in his professional course and showing progress in his studies, decided that he wanted to take a break because he had gotten the permit to work in the UK and so he rather will (ordinarily put), sacrifice his last few papers to complete his professional course and focus on working in a menial job instead, and I was like WHAT? you think you can make a future with this job in the future at the expense of your professional qualification in accountancy? You don't know what you are saying or you don't know what you are about to do, I wouldn't advise that not in a million years.

OK he said, what about if I just want to take a break for sometime and then after a year or so, I will come a finish the remaining papers (like trying to convince me)? I said what are you talking about, between you and I, you know once you stop or postpone something that you need to do now and decide to do it in the future, chances are that you may not come to do it any sooner and possibly you may not come back to do it again. It is only human, we will often not get back to do what we left sometime ago. Life is always ongoing and when you refuse to do something you can do now and postpone it till later, it is possible that something else will come along to engage you and your time and you may never get the time to come back to do what you left.

This is what I meant by the bigger picture, what picture do you have of yourself, will you, like my student let a small success or small gain now let you forget about the bigger picture.

Honestly, it is not just about my student alone, it is about all of us, we often wonder away from the picture (the imaginary picture) and we look so hard and for so long at the depressing pictures of ourselves - that is when we start to focus on the smaller things in life instead of the bigger breams that we wish for.

The bigger picture is important, lets look at the bigger picture in every decision that we take and every move we make.

Thank you for seeing the bigger picture of yourself first and of others second.

Because I can trust you

Because I can trust you
I marked the scripts of an internally accessed exams for a degree programme and then submitted the marked scripts to the programme coordinator to process the scripts and to make sure that the marks are tallied and totalled properly.

When she had gone through a the scripts she found about two scripts which had one or two marks more and she came to me to rectify the marks and to check if I could confirm with her total.

When I have finished rectifying the marks on the two scripts, she later found a third script that was one mark more than the student actually obtained and she asked me to check and to rectify it if I agree with the marks, but I jokingly said to her you can change it.

I taught she didn't hear what I said to her, when she said can I change the marks? Yes I said, I have given you the right to change the marks. She was like oh, you mean I can change whatever I like on the script and you are sure, but this is where I said to her yes you can BECAUSE I TRUST YOU.

I said to her I know you will not do anything improper with  students marks either in moderating it or entering the final results for grading because when you do such a thing it will always be on your conscience and you don't want to go through the rest of your life with such a scar on your mind.

I said to her, when you do such a thing, it is just a short sighted attitude to life, the reality is that in future when you are in a position of trust and encouraging people to act with integrity, you will always feel incomplete, lack of confidence and weak.

Integrity is important, people can trust you and give you further responsibility if you are faithful with the little that you are given and one of the ways to achieve this is to act with integrity and have good conscience in everything you do.

Can your superior at work say to you that go ahead with a particular thing without him or her checking because he or she trust you? If not then that is a big problem and we should always strive to achieve such level of trust with people around us.

This is a true saying any time and any day, and do not be deceived:

  • Integrity matters
  • Trust matters

Let's work hard in everything that we do to earn the trust of people around us and act with integrity, because it really matters (or simply put, integrity and trust is a big thing).

Thank you - Because I can trust you

Sometimes I change my mind

Sometimes I change my mind.

What is your mind? and what have you decided you want to do or do not want to do? Sometimes we make our mind that we may not want to do a particular thing but as things change and with time what we always said we will never do, we find ourselves doing.

A colleague of mine said, I don't think I can lecture, i don't think I am ready to lecture at least in the next few years. I will never be ready to lecture, but just after few second of this comment, she said, anyway sometimes I change my mind.

In the office we all started smiling about it and were making comment like, who doesn't change his/her mind anyway, we all sometimes change our mind. I remember one college saying, it is almost unthinkable to say you don't change your mind or you will never change your mind on certain issues, so long as you are alive, you will continue to change (or renew) you mind, it is only when you are dead, then can you decide you wont change your mind.

The question is what are you changing your mind on?, are you changing your mind for positive thing or for negative thing? are you changing your mind for good or for bad things? It is important to have flexibility in thinking with regards to certain things, but it is also important not to compromise on certain things, but what is important is, if you have to change your mind with regards to certain things, it should be that you change your mind for good, positive, progressive, excellent, etc...things, because that is what will make you successful.

I sometimes change my mind as well, what can we do? it is only human. isn't it?;
Thank you

Always good to learn something

Always good to learn something

I have just finished with my lectures on ratio analysis and the act of benchmarking. One of the points I made was that in benchmarking, there is an aspect that is refered to as internal benchmarking. this is where we compare activities within the orgnisation; say comparing one department against another witnin the same organisation.

This comparison will enable the organisation to identify some strengths within one department which may be used by other departments to bring about improvement in its activities.

It is often commented that, using internal bench marking, may bring about inter departmental rivalry. Some managers in a particular department may be unwilling to learn from other departments. They may think it is interferance and may close their mind to any form of learning from other departments. Some of the reasons for which such people may be unwilling to learn from other departments may be due to arrogance, pride, feeling superiority or thinking of knowing too much and that no input from any other person is goo enough.

I have this this saying that there is no end to learning and nobody is too good to refuse contributions and suggestions, no matter how little it may seem. You may have several years of experience in whatever you are doing, you may have won international awards on your field of specialisation. You may even be an authority or an expert in what you do, but it is still true that you dont know everything and may be, say may be, just that little suggestion, or contribution from the person who you think can not be compared to you is all that you need to take you to a higher (another) level.

We are not perfect, we all need input from people from time to time; this may bring new meaning and direction to us. This will make us better and successful in whatever we are doing. We should not be too known and refuse or challenge any form of objective feeback (or even criticisms). No one is bigger, better, brighter than a little bit of feedback and suggestion.

What do you see?

What do you see?

What you see, hear and think about issues matters. There are lots of news about the economy being in recession about unemployment levels increasing, inflation rate increasing, Greece, Republic of Ireland, Portugal etc needing financial bail out from the EU.

There are so many things happening around us, we hear so many things and see so many things, but the question is what do you see? what do you hear? and what do you think? are quite different things all together.

We may see the same thing, hear the same thing, but may think of such things differently. It is what you think of things that matters.

Even if you don't have control over what you see and what you hear, you have control over what you think of such things . . . because what your thinking is on issues, will make you take positive or negative steps about such issue.

It is important for one to develop a positive metal attitude, to see light in the midst of darkness, success in the midst of failures, possible in the midst of impossible, and certainty in the midst of uncertainty.

Why do you wait and put on hold on your ideas and creativity? you may be waiting for the right time, but one thing i have learnt is that there is no right time for any thing, the right time is now. Just go for it and don't delay any more, You have waited enough, just take up the challenge, you will never know what you can become or achieve except you take positive action (don't just try, give your best).

You may not be able to control some of the things that you see or hear, but you definitely have control over what you think, develop the power of your thinking and have a positive metal attitude to things and you will achieve what you have always desired for and have seemed impossible for such a long time.

Thank you
